Predicament Play

Workshop:

Predicament Play

When comfort becomes part of the problem

Predicament play creates situations in which there is no entirely comfortable answer. Shift your weight and one tension eases while another appears. Change position and the rope responds. Stay still, and that becomes a choice too.

In this full-day workshop, we explore how rope, body position, objects and the surrounding space can be used to create playful dilemmas that continuously ask one deliciously inconvenient question:

Now what?

Creating the dilemma

Predicament play doesn’t have to mean complicated ties or extreme positions. The interesting part lies in how the different elements of a scene interact.

We’ll look at ways to create situations in which movement has consequences. A rope may connect one part of the body to another, an object may change the available choices, or a seemingly simple position may become increasingly challenging as the scene develops.

Rather than reproducing fixed patterns, you’ll learn principles that can be adapted, combined and played with. We’ll work with anticipation, contrast, restriction and discomfort, and explore how relatively simple rope can create surprisingly layered situations.

The aim isn’t to make escape impossible. It’s to make every solution create a new question.

Creating the predicament

Using rope, body position, objects and the environment to construct dilemmas with more than one possible response.

02.  Respond

Movement has consequences

Exploring what happens when the person in rope shifts, resists, relaxes, reaches, compensates or tries to make themselves more comfortable.

02.  Respond

03.  Play

From structure to scene

Combining the principles into longer, layered scenarios and learning how to adjust the predicament in response to the person in front of you.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for people who already have a solid foundation in Shibari and want to explore what they can create with those skills beyond reproducing ties and patterns.

You should be comfortable with basic knots, single and double column ties, fundamental frictions and uplines. You should be able to use these confidently enough to focus on the predicament rather than on remembering the technique.

Predicament play can be explored entirely on the floor, but partial suspension opens up a much wider range of possibilities. Being able to work safely with an upline allows us to play with weight, balance, movement and instability, adding another dimension to the dilemmas we create.

This is a partners-only workshop.Because predicament play works with discomfort, restriction and deliberately limited choices, we ask you to attend with someone with whom you already have an established level of trust and communication.
